Never far from Bonnie's mind are her efforts to help build and repair the many
Honduran schools destroyed during one of history's worst natural disasters,
Hurricane Mitch. Presently, Bonnie and her husband, Jesus Medrano are completing
the paperwork to officially open the Celtino Foundation. With the completion of
thirteen schools and several dozen homes, the work has only begun. From private
donors, three promising rural children have also received scholarships to attend
high school. There is little schooling opportunities for rural children beyond
the sixth and sometimes third grade level. In order for a child to pursue
further education, they must attend boarding schools in distant towns or cities.
The educational focus of The Celtino Foundation will be to continue to provide
supplies for local communities to build their own schools and to offer
scholarships to rural children who wish to attend high school and continue on to
college or vocational school. Once the final legal work is complete, Bonnie hopes
to direct two high profile fund-raising concerts; one at The National Geographic's
Grosvenor Auditorium and the other will be in conjunction with the International
Mission Board in North Carolina.
Bonnie and Jesus recently met with the First Lady, Mrs. Mary Flores and
visited the thirteen schools which have been built and/or renovated
(in addition to thirty five homes) from the proceeds of her Hurricane
Mitch benefit concert. Plans are under way for two more CELTINO
concerts to be held at the National Geographic's Grosvenor Auditorium.
